News / Sumburgh Head to reopen
A BLAST of the Sumburgh Head foghorn on Saturday will signal the opening of its visitor centre and nature reserve for the 2017 season.
Lighthouse engineer Brian Johnson, who helped to renovate the historic horn, will be on hand to sound the equipment at midday.
The Sumburgh Head visitor centre will open an hour earlier at 11am, with the facility set to remain in action until September.
The Stevenson Centre ‘tearoom’ will also be open through the season daily from 11am to 4.30pm except for Wednesdays when the building is used for educational events and activities.
Ticket prices for the visitor centre will remain the same as last year and attractions on offer will include the engine room, smiddy, marine life centre and radar hut displays.
The Sumburgh Head lighthouse, visitor centre and nature reserve are managed by Shetland Amenity Trust in partnership with the RSPB and in co-operation with the Northern Lighthouse Board.
