Council / Council proposes 40mph speed limit in Voe

A 40MPH speed limit could be introduced on the A970 main road through Voe.

Shetland Islands Council has proposed the change, which would see the current speed limit reduced down from 50mph.

The council said the 40mph limit would be put in place for a distance of around 1.2 kilometres through the village.

Road safety has been a regular issue for residents of Voe, with a public meeting held on the topic back in 2023.

It comes as reduced 20mph zones are set to be introduced throughout most of Lerwick and Scalloway shortly.

Public consultations are also set to take place in the near future around possible new traffic calming measures in parts of Lerwick.

They will focus on four areas – Gilbertson Road, King Harald Street, South Road and Lochside.

Anyone with any objections to the proposal to introduce a 40mph limit to Voe must send their objection in writing to: John R Smith, Director of Infrastructure Services, Proper Officer for the Shetland Islands Council, Upper Building, Gremista, Lerwick, ZE1 0PX.

This must be done by 4pm on 2 June 2025.

Objections should state the name and address of the objector, the matter to which their objections relate and the grounds on which they are made.

A copy of the proposed order, together with a map showing the lengths of road affected and the reasons for proposing to make the order, may be inspected at offices of the council’s roads service, Gremista, Lerwick during normal office hours.
