Dairy ‘delighted’ by shop’s trial to cut cost of milk for customers

A LOCAL shop’s move to slash the price its customers pay for Shetland milk has been warmly welcomed by the local dairy.

Scalloway Meat Company announced last week that it would be trialling selling Shetland milk for less than both Tesco and the Co-op.

It said that the move came in response to folk asking for lower prices on everyday essentials, and it urged its “valued customers” to back them as well.

“Buying your milk from local shops helps keep them in business and keeps the profits in Shetland rather than lining the pockets of supermarket shareholders,” it said in a social media post.

“So next time you need a flask of milk, you can be confident you’re getting the best price and supporting local”.

Robbie Gray of Shetland Farm Dairies told Shetland News they were firmly behind Scalloway Meat Company’s trial and hoped it proved a success.

“We are delighted to see a local shop reducing their prices to help promote our products and in turn help the strain on customers bank balances, especially with the current cost of living,” he said.

“As always, we are delighted to have so many customers that support Shetland Farm Dairies – they are the only reason local milk remains in Shetland.”

He said Scalloway Meat Company had previously trialled lowering the cost of other dairy products, which had seemed to be beneficial for both the shop and the dairy.

“All our products are available at the dairy, supermarkets, and any local shops. All retailers can get the full range in stock, so we encourage customers to ask at their local shops if they wish to see more of our products available.”

Scalloway Meat Company said it would be offering a pint of milk for 94p, one litre for £1.59 and two litres for £2.64.

It also pledged to cut prices on Shetland single and double cream.
