Community / ‘Give them a friendly wave’ – classic car extravaganza comes to Shetland
LOCAL classic car enthusiasts will be treated to a rare spectacle this weekend and early next week when 21 classic Jaguar, Triumph and MG cars tour the isles.
The Round Scotland Tour includes six Jaguar XKs, seven E-types, two X-types and an XK8, together with four Triumph TR4, 5 and 6 models plus an MG Midget.
The age of the vehicles goes back to 1952, and Shetland has been described as the “most extreme part” of the group’s 16-day tour of 28 Scottish islands.
Arriving off the ferry on Sunday morning, the 21 cars will spend the day touring the South Mainland and will also be meeting members of the Shetland Classic Car Club.
Monday will take them north to take visitor attractions in Yell and Unst followed by an overnight stay in the Brae Hotel, and a tour of the West Mainland on Tuesday before embarking on the overnight ferry south.
Malcolm McKay of ClassicRallyPress said: “We think this is the most ambitious car event ever attempted to showcase Scotland’s Northern and Western Isles, and it’s certainly not been easy with ferry cancellations, etc.
“We are looking forward to Shetland as the climax of our tour with some of the finest scenery – and the point where we as organisers can finally relax!”
Maurice Mullay of the Shetland Classic Car Club added: “We have had smaller groups of Bentley, Lagonda, Alvis, Sunbeam and veteran cars, etc. touring the islands.
“The group of 21 classic Jaguar, Triumph and MG cars touring Shetland this month is welcomed and greatly appreciated after the period of lockdown.
“If you meet them on the road, show your appreciation with a friendly wave.”
