Fine and ban for drug driving offence
A YOUNG man from Lerwick has been banned from driving for 12 months and fined £800 after getting behind the while over a drug driving limit.
Samuel Youngson, 19, of St Magnus Street, admitted driving a car with 457 microgrammes of benzoylecgonine – the major metabolite of cocaine – per litre of blood on roads in and around Scalloway on 15 February.
The legal limit is 50 microgrammes.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the incident came to light at around 9.30pm when police officers undertook a check on the vehicle.
After a drug wipe Youngson was arrested and taken to Lerwick Police Station.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said the apprentice welder/fabricator conceded he was taking “too much illicit substances” after a setback in his personal life.
However he said the offence has almost been a “positive” in a way given that he sought help afterwards. S
heriff Ian Cruickshank admonished Youngson on a charge of driving with no insurance.
