Former councillor and amenity trust chair Brian Gregson to be remembered
THE LIFE of former commander of RAF Saxa Vord, councillor and long serving chair of Shetland Amenity Trust Brian Gregson will be celebrated at an event in the Mid Yell Hall next Monday.
The 78-year-old, who had been living in Yell for more than three decades, died in Norwich in May this year.
Brian had a distinguished career in the Royal Air Force, retiring as squadron leader and serving as commanding officer at RAF Saxa Vord from 1989 to 1991.
He was elected as a councillor for Yell North and Fetlar in 1994 and again in 2003 for Unst.
Gregson was a trustee of Shetland Amenity Trust from 1994, becoming the organisation’s chair in 2007, a position from which he retired in 2017 citing health reasons.
Paying tribute during a meeting of the full council last month, convener Bryan Peterson said Brian had made a lasting contribution to Shetland in public life and the wider community.
“He was known for his calm and gentle nature and genuine interest in the people around him,” Peterson said.
“A talented musician, he played both flute and violin and enjoyed model yacht sailing, spinning, art and reading.”
In a message to his family, Shetland Amenity Trust said was Brian “was a passionate advocate for Shetland’s heritage and culture and gave generously of his time and knowledge during his years of service”.
“On behalf of the board of trustees, staff and volunteers of Shetland Amenity Trust, we extend our condolences to Brian’s family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”
A celebration of his life will take place in the Mid Yell Hall on Monday 17 August at 3pm.
Following the service, friends are warmly invited to stay for refreshments and to share memories of Brian’s life. Donations will be collected in support of Dementia UK.
