News / Air passenger traffic up

SUMBURGH airport experienced a huge increase in passenger traffic during December compared to the previous year, along with the rest of the highlands and islands.

Airport owners Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) recorded 3,000 more passengers using the Shetland airport during the month, an increase of 28 per cent to 13, 364.

The company said the main cause for the huge increase was the much improved weather.

Managing director Inglis Lyon said: “December 2010 was exceptional in terms of winter weather conditions which saw cancellations and snow closures throughout the HIAL group.”

The group as whole recorded a 24.7 per cent increase. Campbeltown more than doubled their numbers from 335 to 679, a rise of 102.7 per cent.
