STREAMLINE has been fined £146,700 after an employee at its Aberdeen site suffered serious and life-changing injuries.

A 43-year-old man was struck by a forklift in the company’s Palmerston Quay yard, suffering multiple fractures to his right foot and lower leg and a degloving injury.

He had to undergo two surgical procedures, skin grafts and has required counselling, while still not returning to work as a result of his injuries.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Streamline, which has base in Lerwick, failed to ensure its workplace was organised in such a way that pedestrians and vehicles could circulate safely.

HSE concluded it was reasonably foreseeable that an employee on foot faced a risk of being struck by a moving vehicle when both the pedestrian and driver were concentrating on their respective tasks near each other.

An improvement notice was served on the company, and Streamline made a series of improvements to its traffic management arrangements as a result.

PEOPLE are being warned about salespeople going door-to-door and online adverts for forthcoming sales visits to Shetland.

“Every year we hear about rogue traders trying to put pressure on people to buy goods or services on the doorstep,” trading standards team leader David Marsh said.

“It is now increasingly likely that some will promote their offers through Facebook and other social media even before they arrive here.

“Typical false claims include special pricing offers, limited availability, exaggerated claims about warranties and guarantees, and supposed links to the council or to reputable local businesses – while the reality often turns out to be items or work which are not up to the quality the consumer was led to expect.

“The best defence is to take time to check out any claims and to shop around – and if someone at your door refuses to take no for an answer, then phone trading standards or the police right away.”
