Maintenance work at Garrison nearing completion
MAINTENANCE work on the roof of the Garrison Theatre in Lerwick is now complete.
A meeting of Shetland Charitable Trust, which owns the building, heard on Thursday that there is still some internal work – such as electrics – to finish.
The building has been closed to the public since last year due to the repair work, with some events and productions having to move to other venues such as Mareel.
Some of the work at the Garrison, which is operated by Shetland Arts, has included a new slate roof and guttering.
The charitable trust said in September last year when the annual pantomime was cancelled that strict safety standards meant a new scaffolding framework would need to be designed by consultants and erected.
Figures showed that the trust spent more than £440,000 on building maintenance in the 2025/26 financial year, but this has included some work on its headquarters on Lerwick’s Commercial Road.
The Garrison, which is C-listed, was built in 1903 as a drill hall and gym for the local volunteer soldiers of the Gordon Highlanders.
It was then converted into a theatre in the 1940s.
