AROUND 70 homes in Vidlin and Whiteness have lost power this afternoon (Monday).

SSEN said power was lost to 73 properties in three postcodes just after 3pm, caused by a fault on the overhead network.

Power is only expected to be restored by 8pm tonight, people in the area have been told.

A COUNTRY artist from Nashville is set to come to the isles for the first time this summer.

Singer Hannah Anders, who is known for delivering performances to audiences throughout Scotland, will perform in Unst and Lerwick in July.

Promoter Stuart Smylie of Smiles Entertainment is bringing Anders to Shetland for an UnstFest concert at Baltasound Hall on Wednesday 22 July, which will be the most northerly gig she has ever played.

The following evening she will appear at Mareel.

Smylie said the shows represent an exciting opportunity to bring international touring artists to new audiences while showcasing Shetland as a destination for live music.

“Bringing artists of Hannah’s calibre to Shetland is about creating memorable experiences and ensuring island audiences can enjoy the same quality of live music found in major cities,” he said.

THE JUNIOR Up Helly Aa committee is inviting the community to help name its exhibition galley as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations.

Young people and volunteers have been hard at work giving the Viking longship, originally built in 1987, a fresh new look in recent weeks.

Children, young people and members of the wider community are all encouraged to submit their name suggestions here.

The deadline for entries is Sunday 17 May at 5pm, with the winning name to be selected by a panel of young people and festival volunteers.

The celebrations will also include a special dinner dance at Lerwick Town Hall, hosted by council convener Bryan Peterson, who was himself junior jarl in 1990.

The event will bring together 40 former junior jarls to reflect on the festival’s rich 70-year history and look ahead to the future of the festival.

SHETLAND Arts says it is looking forward to welcoming theatre artist Alys Williams to Mareel with her acclaimed debut play The Light House on Saturday 16 May.

The performance will also include a post-show Q&A session.

Shetland Arts said “with puppetry, clowning and gently embedded audience participation, the play is supported by an exciting, female-led creative team”.

Tickets for The Light House are available online or in person at Mareel, or 01595 745 500, between 10am-9pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
