THE LARGEST yacht taking part in the Shetland Race has been the first over the line this afternoon though this does not mean she has won the race.

The 23 metre EnderPearl with a crew of 12 completed the 200 miles race in just over 26 hours.

Forty-two yachts left Bergen at Wednesday lunchtime for the annual race but two had to retire and returned to the Norwegian port city.

Most of the participating yachts with a total of around 220 sailors on board are expected to arrive during the afternoon and evening today (Thursday).

The progress of the yachts can be followed here.

Two-thirds of the fleet are new entrants including crews from Germany and Sweden.  Around 220 sailors are expected for the weekend.

Event organisers said they were all looking forward the prizegiving at Mareel on Friday evening, one of the highlights of the event.

The return race back to Bergen is an early start on Sunday morning (25 June) with yachts crossing the start line at Lerwick at 8 am.
