THE OVERALL winner of the first leg of the Bergen-Shetland race was Eureka, a double handed vessel from Stavanger.

The award was given out at a ceremony at Mareel in Lerwick on Friday evening.

Eureka’s Lars Enok Wang told Shetland News after arriving in Lerwick that the journey from Norway was “tough’.

“It’s not comfortable, but it’s always great fun,” he said.

The prize for best placed newcomer went to Avanti II, also from Stavanger, and the first across the line award went to the 12-crew Enderpearl from Telemark.

The wooden spoon this year went to Elisa from Porsgrunn.

Leg two of the race starts on Sunday morning with yachts leaving their berths at 7am and crossing the start line at 8am.

A total of 35 yachts will race back to Norway, with the other five continuing elsewhere on another voyage.

Forty two yachts left Bergen at Wednesday lunchtime for the annual race, but two had to retire and returned to the Norwegian port city.

The remaining yachts began arriving in Lerwick on Thursday afternoon.
