Drivers advised to be careful after oil spills at Black Gaet and Brae

THE COUNCIL is asking drivers to take care after an oil spill on the A970 main road south of the Black Gaet junction.

Shetland Islands Council (SIC) said the oil spill appears to be diesel and has affected the road surface in several areas.

“After overnight rain, the road surface may be slippery and potentially hazardous for vehicles,” it said.

There are also reports of a similar oil spill in the North Mainland through Brae and towards Toft.

The SIC said it was not clear if these two spills were related.

Council staff have placed warning signs at various points and deposited sand across the road surface on the worst affected areas, at bends and at junctions.
