Scottish Cup, Spurs and Southend matches headline busy footballing weekend
A FIRST ever Scottish Cup tie on Shetland soil, a potential title decider and a Parish Cup semi-final are the highlights of a packed footballing weekend.
Shetland Women’s team will welcome Stewarton Annick to Gilbertson Park on Sunday for their first ever venture into the women’s Scottish Cup.
The first preliminary round match was pushed back by a week to allow the Ayrshire-based side to raise thousands of pounds to travel to and from Shetland for the game.
With the cash secured, Shetland v Stewarton Annick will kick-off at 2.45pm on Sunday at Gilbertson Park.
A good crowd is expected as the blues’ make history by making a first step into the prestigious national competition, with hopes high that they can progress even further.
In the Ocean Kinetics Premier League, Lerwick Spurs can reclaim the title for the first time since 2023 with a victory over Whalsay tonight (Friday).
The Milkbags welcomed the side from the Bonnie Isle to Clickimin 1, where three points will be enough to ensure that they snatch back the trophy following an acrimonious title battle with Whitedale last season.
Anything less than a Spurs victory will give Whalsay the chance to catch the league leaders by winning their two games-in-hand, against Scalloway and Celtic respectively.
Southend United will host Delting on Sunday in the semi-final of the Parish Cup, looking to make a third final in the last four years.
The two teams will meet at Boddam at 4pm, having crossed swords in the 2018 and 2019 finals – and with the sides sharing a win each in those fixtures.
Delting are 15-time winners but have not lifted the cup since that 2018 success on penalties, while Southend last took the cup home to the South Mainland in 2023 after beating Whalsay.
Sandwick lie in wait in the final next weekend after beating Unst 3-1, and are looking to end a 63-year barren spell in the competition.
Meanwhile Southside Impact continue their bid to finish the Jewson Championship undefeated with a tricky away trip to face champions North Isles on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams meet at Baltasound at 2pm, before Ness C host Wastside Rebels at Sandwick, Boca Seniors cross the sound to face Bressay Sharks and Delting B meet Banks at the North Loch 3G pitch in Lerwick.
