Community / Monster truck among the attractions as carnival to return to Lerwick this weekend

The Red Dragon on a previous visit to Lerwick.

SHETLAND’s MIDSUMMER Carnival will return this weekend for its first outing since 2019.

The Lerwick event, held to raise money for the Callum Younger Reach Fund, will take place on Saturday, starting at 6.30pm from Lower Hillhead. Spectators are advised to gather from 6pm.

This is the first carnival since 2019, with the Covid restrictions first calling it off before the poor weather cancelled the event last year on safety grounds.

This year the carnival has attracted a variety of entrants, including jarl squads from all over Shetland as well as the Lerwick juniors.

Also taking part is the Lerwick Brass Band, dancers, trikes, the Sound and Bells Brae primary schools, decorated floats, foot collectors and the Red Dragon Monster Truck.

The truck is making a return visit to the isles, having been in Shetland before in 2016.

It will be doing rides all day at £10 per ride on Saturday and Sunday, at the old North Road behind Shetland Self Catering.

The carnival organisers are also giving someone the chance to win two free tickets to ride in the back of the monster truck during the parade itself.

To enter people are asked to email their name and contact telephone number to reddragonmonstertruckrides@outlook.com. A name will be drawn at random.

The closing date will be midnight on Friday (23 June) and winners will be notified on the Saturday morning.

For the other eight seats they are £50 each – for the carnival procession only – on a first come, first serve basis. To book a seat on the monster truck during the parade people can phone 07475189941.

Chairman of the fund Malcolm Younger said: “It will be great to see the carnival back, bringing folk together to enjoy the carnival by either taking part or watching, raising funds to support young people in Shetland.”

He also thanked NorthLink for their sponsorship.
