Shetland Arts – still to come in June

Shetland Arts have had a busy June but there is still much more to come, with a mix of live music, performance, exhibitions and new cinema releases through the rest of the month.

For live events, there’s something for everyone – from large standing music gigs to informal open mics and a carnival with giant puppets!

Shetland Story Slam returns with an open-mic evening of true, personal storytelling. Singer Songwriter Night offer an open stage for local musicians and performers to try out new material.

First Foot Soldiers and The Dead Pans come together for a midsummer gig featuring new collaborations between the bands and special guests. Young Musicians Sessions is a showcase of Shetland’s emerging local talent in Mareel’s café bar.

ALICE Theatre and MusicALICE Companies present Pop Goghs Da Easel, exploring visual art through theatre performance. Giants Dance in Da Simmer Dim brings Shetland folklore to life through a carnival of music, puppetry and dance at St Ninian’s Beach.

In Mareel, exhibitions continue throughout the summer. Eerie Isles is a local photography exhibition inviting photographers to capture the haunting, mysterious and atmospheric side of Shetland, created to coincide with the Shetland Noir festival earlier in June. Ten Portraits is touring Scotland with a stop at Mareel and is part of a three-year listening project led by playwright Nicola McCartney, documenting the lives of care experienced people in Scotland.

The June cinema programme continues with a wide mix of screenings for all ages, from family films and kids’ titles to cult classics and National Theatre Live. Our Shetland Noir season continues with Chinatown and The Big Heat. New releases include Toy Story 5, the return of the Scary Movie franchise and Steven Spielberg’s latest, Disclosure Day. There are also world and independent cinema titles including Köln 75 and The Balloonists.
