Mareel cinema ticket price for under-16s to reduce over summer after government VAT cut
THE PRICE of children’s cinema tickets at Mareel is set to reduce over the coming months after the UK Government’s VAT cut on summer activities.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ recent announcement – designed to reduce the cost of living for families – included attractions like theme parks, museums and cinema tickets.
Shetland Arts has confirmed that the cost of under-16 cinema tickets at its Lerwick arts venue Mareel will reduce from £7.15 to £6.25 (including the booking fee) between 26 June and 2 September.
Reeves announced a temporary VAT cut on “summer attractions” from 20 per cent to five per cent in a bid to lower costs for families over the upcoming holidays.
She said it was a UK-wide measure, adding: “This will apply to ticket prices for both adults and children, covering attractions such as fairs, theme parks, zoos and museums. It will include children’s tickets for cinemas, concerts, soft play and the theatre.”
A spokesperson for Shetland Arts said the VAT cut is “really welcome news for families across Shetland, and we’re delighted to be able to make going to the cinema more affordable for young audiences this summer”.
“From the 26th of June to the 2nd of September, we’ll be reducing our under-16 ticket prices to £6.25 (including booking fee), helping young people enjoy the big screen for less during the holidays,” they said.
“It’s also come at the perfect time, with a fantastic run of films on the way including; Minions & Monsters, Moana (live action), Supergirl and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
Although cinema tickets rose in price recently, Shetland Arts also introduced new membership schemes, including one designed for families.
