Sassermaet, swimming and Skerries – bucket list of 100 must-do Shetland experiences launched

A BUCKET list of 100 unforgettable Shetland experiences has been launched for residents and locals by Promote Shetland.

The leaflet of unmissable activities across the isles has been launched alongside a photo challenge encouraging folk to tick things off and share photos as they work their way through the list.

Promote Shetland said the 100 experiences have been chosen to capture the spirit of Shetland, and range from iconic landscapes and wildlife encounters to local culture, food and hidden gems across the islands.

Among the must-do items are sampling a sassermaet roll, learning to dance a Shetland reel, hiking to the top of Ronas Hill and taking part in the Bressay parkrun event.

“From summer hikes and stormy coastal walks to family-friendly activities and once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters, these 100 ideas offer something for all ages, interests and seasons,” Promote Shetland said.

“You won’t tick them all off in a week – or even a season – but that’s the point.

“This is a bucket list built for Shetland life, year-round.”

Promote Shetland is encouraging folk to take part by trying one of the experiences and sharing a photo of it on social media, to celebrate the launch of the Shetland 100.

To enter participants need to download the leaflet, choose one of the experiences and share a photo of them enjoying it by using their online submission form or by sharing it on social media with the hashtag #Shetland100

Every valid entry will be entered into a prize draw to win return travel for four between Aberdeen and Shetland with a cabin, courtesy of NorthLink Ferries.

Promote Shetland’s head of content marketing Adam Civico said the Shetland 100 “is all about celebrating the incredible variety of experiences the islands have to offer – from the well-known favourites to the unexpected moments and places people might not discover otherwise.”

“We wanted to create something that encourages both visitors and local people to explore more of Shetland, try something new and share their own experiences along the way,” Civico said.

“We’re looking forward to seeing people’s photos and the different ways they experience the islands.”

The Shetland 100 leaflet is available to download here.
