Police / Drivers charged with speeding and other motoring offences

A police car is parked on a scenic overlook with a view of a coastal town and body of water. An informational sign is mounted nearby.

MORE than 70 vehicles were stopped by road police visiting Shetland from the mainland over the last week.

Seven drivers were charged with speeding and another four were charged with mobile phone offences during the patrols, which came as part of Police Scotland’s get ready for winter campaign.

Police Scotland said 74 vehicles were stopped overall, including cars, motorbikes, HGV’s and campervans.

Twelve vehicles failed roadside condition checks, and another six drivers were charged with insecure load or trailer security offences.

Officers also took the opportunity to engage with a variety of road users including cyclists to provide advice on road safety.

Police Scotland encouraged all drivers to regularly check their vehicles roadworthiness and to be “extra vigilant” in the winter.

“We would also encourage pedestrians and cyclists to make sure they are wearing bright reflective clothing particularly during the hours of darkness,” it said.
