A SHETLAND business adviser has been chosen to receive a Business Gateway Impact Award.

Genevieve White.

Genevieve White was selected from nominees submitted by business owners who have directly benefited from her guidance, expertise and commitment.

Business owners praised White for her “compassionate, inclusive and confidence-building support”, with several people saying she had helped them feel capable, understood and empowered to progress.

Councillor Gail Macgregor, who is chairwoman of the Business Gateway board, offered her congratulations to White.

“Genevieve and the rest of the Business Gateway network go above and beyond every day to help businesses thrive, and these awards are a testament to their dedication and the tangible difference they make,” she said.

SIGNS designed by school bairns to raise awareness of dog fouling have gone up around Lerwick.

Pupils from Sound Primary School came up with the designs, which aim to encourage positive behaviour by dog owners. Dog fouling has long been a concern raised by Lerwick Community Council, and Sound pupils were equally keen to tackle the topic.

They were given creative freedom to design bold, eye-catching artwork to help deliver clear messages to the community, with seven final designs chosen.

Artmachine helped transform them into outdoor posters, with young people from the Bridges youth project and the council’s estate operations team cutting, painting and preparing backing boards.

The poster boards have now been installed at key locations throughout Lerwick.

Environmental health team leader Louise Moar said they were “delighted to collaborate with Sound Primary School”.

“The children were highly engaged and enthusiastic, and the standard of artwork they created was exceptional. It was a real challenge to select the final designs and we hope they will make a positive impact locally.”

ANYONE interested in becoming a tour guide in Shetland will have the chance to learn up the required skills later this year.

After a four-year break, Island Vista will run another Green Badge guide training course starting in September.

The intensive eight-month programme ends with a three-day assessment with students will explore Shetland’s heritage and way of life while also learning how to market themselves as self-employed guides.

Practical training takes place on the coach along the South Mainland route and on site at Jarlshof.

Students gain a professionally recognised accreditation from the Scottish Tourist Guide Association for completing the course.

Island Vista owner Jolene Garriock said the course “isn’t for the faint-hearted”.

“It’s a significant commitment of time and money but guiding is hugely rewarding,” she said. “It’s a privilege to show people our beautiful islands and help make their holiday even better.”

Anyone interested in joining the course should contact Island Vista for an application form and further details at info@islandvista.co.uk

ALDI is calling on local sports clubs to apply for its annual Sports Fund initiative, with £50,000 up for grabs nationwide.

The fund offers clubs the chance to secure a top prize of £3,000, with additional funding packages of £1,250 and £750.

From improving facilities to providing essential kit and equipment, Aldi said the fund has played a key role in widening access to sport. Sports clubs located across the Highlands and Islands have from Monday 11 May until Sunday 7 June to apply for funding.

AROUND 70 workers on EnQuest’s Magnus oil facility to the northwest of Shetland will now be represented by trade union Unite.

The union said on Thursday that the oil installation’s workforce has overwhelmingly backed Unite recognition.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The latest recognition agreement is another significant win for Unite.

“It demonstrates that we continue to put the interests of the highly skilled offshore workers centre stage of our efforts to deliver better jobs, pay and conditions for working people.”
