AN IMPACT survey has been launched by the group seeking to get the Scalloway swimming pool reopened to the public.

The Save Scalloway Pool group said they wanted Shetland Recreational Trust, Shetland Charitable Trust and Shetland Islands Council to “have a better understanding of the impact closing Scalloway Pool is having in folk across Shetland”.

You can fill out the survey here.

A CEREMONY will be held in Lerwick on Sunday 10 May to mark National Fishing Remembrance Day.

The Fishermen’s Mission has said the service will take place on Albert Wharf at 3pm and is open to the public.

The charity’s chief executive Marc Evans will travel north to attend the event, which will be led by local mission manager Aubrey Jamieson.

As well as hymns, prayers and readings there will be a time of reflection and an opportunity for anyone who wishes to place a flower in the water in memory of a loved one.

“We are glad to provide this opportunity for fishing families and the wider community to come together for this act of remembrance,” Jamieson said.

“This has been a hard few weeks for our islands with some very sad losses. Whilst these recent losses haven’t necessarily happened at sea, they have impacted our fishing community greatly.

“It’s my hope that an event like this can bring some help and solace to individuals and families whether their loss is recent or from many years ago.”

A NEW heritage group has been launched to address a gap in the formal recordings of Shetland seafarers.

The Shetland Seafarers Research Association was established in late 2025 after local author Laughton Johnston pulled together support from existing maritime heritage groups to work together.

The group is seeking to encourage and support local community heritage groups, museums and individuals to participate in the information gathering stage of a three-year project.
