Court / Court round-up – 12 October 2022

A MAN from Glasgow who drove in the North Mainland of Shetland with almost four times the legal limit of alcohol in his system escaped a jail term when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court for sentencing.

Paul Charles Hughes, of Scaraway Drive, also drove without a full licence, no insurance and had taken the vehicle without the owner’s consent.

The incident took place on 8 May on the public roads between the Sella Ness accommodation camp and Brae. The 31-year-old was stopped and arrested at the Co-op carpark in Brae.

At court on Wednesday Sheriff Ian Cruickshank put Hughes on supervision for two years and ordered him to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work. Hughes was also disqualified from driving for two years.

The sheriff warned him that the community payback order, to be transferred to Glasgow, was imposed as an alternative to jail.

A TWENTY four year old man from East Kilbride has been banned from driving for six months as a consequence of having had six further penalty points added to his licence.

Kevan Quinn, of 98 Kelvin Drive, pleaded guilty to three motoring offences, including driving while using a mobile phone, when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday remotely on the phone.

The offences took place at the Co-op on Holmsgarth Road in Lerwick on 18 April.

Defending himself he said he was aware that he would lose his already endorsed licence if further penalty points were to be added to his licence.

However, he said he had nothing further to add when asked what he wanted to put to the court in mitigation.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined Quinn £400 and endorsed the licence with six points, leading to disqualification.
