News / Keep safe when watching orcas
POLICE have reminded the public to keep safe if they are heading out to catch a glimpse of orcas.
Officers have reiterated that anyone who uses a boat to see killer whales should adhere to the code of conduct for marine life observation.
Details of the code of conduct can be found on the Scottish Natural Heritage website, or via its office in Lerwick.
Anyone who wishes to view orcas from their vehicle are reminded to remain aware of other road users and pedestrians, to keep focused on the road and to avoid coming to a sudden halt.
Finally, people watching orcas on foot are asked to be aware of their surroundings when near to cliff edges.
Orcas have been spotted in the last few days in areas like Sumburgh Head, Sandwick and Mousa Sound.
