Shetland stroll through maiden Scottish Cup tie

Shetland Women overcame Stewarton Annick 3-0 on Sunday to progress in the Scottish Cup.

SHETLAND Women’s football team have created more history with a first ever Scottish Cup victory on their maiden appearance.

The blues comfortably saw off Stewarton Annick 3-0 today (Sunday) in the first preliminary round of the famous competition, in front of a packed crowd at the Gilbertson Park in Lerwick.

Young winger Roma Robertson opened the scoring at the end of the first half by tapping in a superbly worked Shetland move, and the home side never looked back from there.

A Stewarton header was cleared off the line in the only moment of real anxiety for the blues’ defence, before striker Freya Leslie eased any nerves by firing Shetland 2-0 up with 10 minutes to play.

She capped off a fine performance by rifling the ball into the net with virtually the last kick of the ball to seal Shetland’s place in the next round of the Scottish Cup.

Their attentions will now turn to the second preliminary round, with Shetland currently scheduled to make the short trip away to Aberdeen West End on Sunday 30 August.
