News / Rhodri wins local scholarship

Andreason High School's class 6 year group head Peter Haviland presenting the award to Rhodri Hawkins.

A BUDDING engineer has been awarded the second annual scholarship as part of a joint scheme between local firm JLO Engineering and the Anderson High School.

Rhodri Hawkins, 17, who is heading to Edinburgh University to study chemical engineering after the summer, is this year’s recipient.

The scholarship, now in its second year, considers students in their final year who are interested in applying for engineering subjects at university. Its overall aim is to provide an insight into working life and get young people thinking about their future careers.

Rhodri said: “I am delighted to have won the scholarship from JLO Engineering Limited and the Anderson High School and thank Joe for recognising my future potential in the engineering sector.

“I am heading to Edinburgh University to study chemical engineering in September and hope that this award is the first step to helping me realise my main goals to obtain a degree in engineering and work within the oil and gas sector.”

Joe Leask of JLO Engineering said: “All students scored highly this year and the selection process was very difficult. Rhodri is clearly a very intelligent person and is achieving well academically.

“Rhodri’s enthusiasm for engineering was very clear showing a level of passion and excitement for the environment he will be working within in the future. I am sure he will do very well at university and will be a good ambassador for the scholarship.”

He said that in the future the scholarship will require funding and is seeking other local businesses in Shetland who are interested in becoming involved.

Joe said it would allow businesses to give something back to the community and provide an opportunity to spot local engineering talent early – with the potential for good quality students for internships throughout their studies.

He added it would help raise awareness of engineering in the islands, nurturing an important skill set to the benefit of future engineering projects such as oil and gas developments west of Shetland, at Sullom Voe and with decommissioning – along with the rapidly developing renewables industry.
