News / Vikings invade Aberdeen

Guizer Jarl Neil Robertson and his squad in good spirits at Aberdeen beach on Wednesday.

ABERDEEN received something of a viking invasion on Wednesday as the 2015 Lerwick Jarl’s Squad landed in the city for this year’s VisitScotland expo.

Guizer Jarl Neil Robertson and his band of merry men travelled to south to promote Shetland – as well as neighbouring Orkney – to visiting travel operators at the event.

The 38 members of the Jarl’s Squad spent time on Aberdeen beach as well as at the expo, which is being held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC).

Robertson, who led this year’s Lerwick Up Helly Aa festivities back in January, said: “It is always a boost to the squad when they are asked to represent Shetland or perform at prestigious events. The effort they have put into making the costumes is rewarded by the demand for their services. The vikings marched visitors into the venue as they teamed up with NorthLink Ferries in an effort to boost the islands’ profile.

“As for me, personally, it is an honour to be asked to help open VisitScotland expo 2015, especially in helping to promote Orkney and Shetland as fantastic holiday destinations via the NorthLink Ferries island routes.”
