Bright spark Sven given award for excellence
AN APPRENTICE from Weisdale has been given an award for excellence for his studies in the Highlands and Islands.
Sven Thomson, who works as an electricity network apprentice for SSEN Distribution, was given the award for excellence in the modern apprenticeship category at an end of term ceremony in Perth.
Thomson grew up in and still lives in Weisdale, and now works at SSEN Distribution’s depot in Gremista.
He started with the company in 2023 by joining with its apprenticeship programme, having long wanted to pursue a career in engineering.
After completing his training, he will become a fully-skilled operator on SSEN’s network of overhead lines and infrastructure in Shetland.
Thomson said he was “looking forward to a long career with SSEN Distribution”.
“I’m now eager to gain practical onsite experience, and do my bit to keep the lights on for the community I’ve part of all my life,” he said.
“This award’s given me the confidence that I’m on the right career path, and I’m now keen to move onto the next stage in my personal development.”
Sarah-Coutts Patience is Thomson’s learner team manager at SSEN Distribution, and she attended the Perth ceremony alongside his parents to cheer him on.
She said she was “so proud” of the recognition coming his way.
“From his very first day with us, he’s been conscientious, methodical, and he’s delivered work of a high standard.
“These are exactly the attributes we need, and it’s been a privilege to help nurture his talent.
“Sven’s a great team player, and he supports his fellow apprentices diligently and with kindness.
“And I’m so glad he wants to continue working full-time in his local community once he completes his training.”
