Community / Lerwick to Scalloway walk raises more than £5k for charity
MORE than £5,000 has been raised for charity after one of Shetland’s most prolific fundraisers led a group of more than 30 folk on a walk from Lerwick to Scalloway.
Kathryn Fullerton and her team were raising money for Muscular Dystrophy UK.
The NorthLink staff member also managed to encourage colleagues in Aberdeen to head out on their own fundraising walk too, while four people in Glasgow joined in too.
The success means that Fullerton is edging closer to the milestone of raising £100,000 for various charities over the years.
She has overseen a variety of fundraising exploits over the last 15 years or so, from the regular sponsored walks to hair shaves, abseiling and a marathon knitting session.
The Lerwick to Scalloway walk was held on Saturday, with people taking around one and a half to two and a half hours to complete it.
“We had a super day, the weather is good as well and it was probably the biggest turn-out we’ve ever had,” Fullerton said.
There were 15 people in Aberdeen and four in Glasgow that joined the 30-plus in Shetland in walking to fundraise for Muscular Dystrophy UK.
Seven year old Phoebe Polson, who has muscular dystrophy, took part in the Lerwick to Scalloway walk – being pushed in an all-terrain wheelchair.
Phoebe also had the honour of picking out the winning ticket for the raffle too.
Muscular dystrophies are described as a group of rare conditions that gradually cause muscles to weaken and waste.
Phoebe’s mum Vanessa said it was “amazing and overwhelming to see so many involved and taking part”.
“Kathryn does an amazing job bringing awareness and raising money for charity so I was over the moon when she decided this year to support the charity Muscular Dystrophy,” she added.

“Phoebe lives with muscular dystrophy so bringing awareness and support the charity to hopefully find a cure is so important.”
With money still coming in, Fullerton said the total from Saturday’s walk could reach nearly £6,000.
“The support has been unbelievable,” she said.
With Fullerton now having raised more than £96,000 over the years, the £100,000 milestone is now well within sight.
Muscular Dystrophy UK was picked by Fullerton has her charity of choice this year.
So what is next? She is wondering about doing something in the middle of summer, “but I’ll have to think about it”.
“I said I’d get to one hundred thousand and that would be it,” Fullerton added. “But no, it’s not going to finish, [I’ll] just keep going.”
The fundraising page for the Muscular Dystrophy UK is still open for donations.
