  • Carmichael questions Russian sanctions
  • New parliamentary office in Lerwick

RELAY for Life is just over a week away, with organisers preparing for a day of fundraising, celebration and remembrance at Clickimin in support of Cancer Research UK.

This year’s event will run from midday to midnight on Saturday 30 May. As always the event will begin with the survivors lap, a moving moment of celebration and reflection.

Anyone who would like take part in the lap should email shetlandsurvivors@yahoo.com

Once the relay gets underway, a programme of family activities including games, stalls, a tea tent and the relay BBQ will get underway, while stalls and games will run from 1pm-5pm.

Visitors can also look forward to special appearances from the fire service, jarl squads, Shetland’s Got Talent winners Inferno and the Shetland Samba Band.

Shetland Young Promoters will bring new acts Hierarchy and Operation Shovel to the music stage in the afternoon, before live sets from Razor Heat, Filskit and the Charlie Clark Country Band follow in the evening.

The organising committee is also appealing for volunteers, particularly on Friday for set-up and on Sunday for pack-down. Anyone able to help is encouraged to contact shetlandrelaychair@yahoo.co.uk

Relay for Life Shetland chair Kerry Llewellyn said the event was “about the incredible power of community coming together to make breakthroughs happen”.

“We would love as many people as possible to join us for what promises to be a very special day.”

ALISTAIR Carmichael has condemned news that the UK Government is to soften sanctions against Russian oil and gas.

Orkney and Shetland’s MP said plans to impose a ban on UK imports of diesel and jet fuel made from Russian oil in third countries had been watered down amid concerns over supplies and price rises due to the war between Iran and USA.

The original plan to ban oil products derived from Russian crude oil, such as jet fuel and diesel, entering the UK from third countries, will now be “phased in” over months.

After Carmichael raised this point in parliament, trade minister Chris Bryant said it was “not our choice to have this war in Iran”.

Reacting afterwards, Carmichael said it seemed that “loopholes” were being allowed for Russian oil and gas to enter the UK market.

“For the many people who successfully protested to get Russian tankers barred from Sullom Voe and Flotta in 2022 – to say nothing of the Ukrainian people themselves – it will be hard to accept the government’s rationale today for softening sanctions on Russian oil and gas, whatever the justification,” he added.

MEANWHILE Alistair Carmichael is set to move in to a new parliamentary office on the street in Lerwick.

The former Stage Door building will be the new constituency office for Alistair Carmichael.

He shared that they would be moving in to a new constituency office at 155 Commercial Street, in the former Stage Door building.

Carmichael said the move had been “about two years in the making” and was “long overdue”.

“Crucially the new office will be a major improvement for people with accessibility needs, which was one of the biggest problems with the previous office, and a major sticking point preventing us moving up to now,” he said.

He added that they would be making the move across in about a month.
