Court / Post Office embezzler ordered to hand over assets worth £7,000
A FORMER Post Office employee from Lerwick who embezzled £160,000 from his employer will have £7,000 of his assets confiscated as a result of his earlier conviction.
Jack Simpson, of North Road, is currently serving a 28-month jail term which was imposed in July last year after the then 29-year-old pleaded guilty to embezzling the six figure sum over an eight month period in 2021.
At the time the court heard how Simpson had spun an elaborate web of deception enabling him to get access to the funds after his gambling addition spiralled out of control.
On Wednesday, the court heard that after months of negotiations between the Crown and Simpson’s legal team a “joint motion” had been agreed.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank noted that matters had resolved, and made a confiscation order for £7,020.
Payment from various accounts held by Simpson will have to be made to the clerk at Lerwick Sheriff Court within the next six months.
