Transport / NorthLink fares for April onwards to be ‘confirmed as soon as possible’

TRANSPORT Scotland has reiterated that NorthLink bookings for beyond March will be made available as soon as fares are set.

It comes after the matter was raised at a meeting of Lerwick Community Council on Monday evening, where Stewart Hay said restrictions on booking in advance was a concern to many.

NorthLink Ferries is unable to open up bookings beyond a certain point until fares are set by government agency Transport Scotland.

It usually means that people can only book a number of months in advance.

It was announced in June that fares would be frozen until the end of March 2024 help people and businesses from Scotland’s island communities.

With no bookings available yet from April onwards, local people cannot book a trip away yet for the Easter holidays, for example.

Asked when bookings will open up further, a spokesperson for Transport Scotland said on Tuesday: “Fares beyond that [end of March 2024] will be confirmed as soon as possible, as we appreciate passengers and businesses need to plan ahead.”

Hay also questioned the progress of the Scottish Government’s Fair Fares Review.
