DUNCAN Thompson has been appointed as the new manager of Sumburgh Airport.

It is another Shetland airport ticked off the list, given that he has previously worked at Scatsta and Tingwall.

Thompson has taken on the role after the retirement of Susan Mail.

He worked at the former Scatsta Airport from 2000 until its closure in 2020.

Starting as a firefighter, he progressed through the ranks to senior airport fire officer/airside operations manager.

He also worked as part of the fire service at Sumburgh Airport for seven months following Scatsta Airport’s closure, before joining Shetland Islands Council as a health and safety advisor.

Thompson’s career also included four years as Tingwall Airport manager.

HIAL’s director of airport operations Andrew Farquhar – who is also a former Sumburgh manager – said Thompson brings a “wealth of skills, experience and local knowledge” to the role.

Sumburgh is one of 11 airports the government-owned HIAL operates.
