Emergency services / Bomb disposal team due on Sunday
A TEAM of experts from the Faslane naval base is on its way to Shetland to safely dispose of some ‘historic ordnance’ that was taken into Scalloway Primary School from a nearby beach on Friday.
The explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team is due to disembark from the ferry on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, police have cordoned off the area of the school which is also remotely monitored by the bomb disposal team.
Police said there was no immediate risk for the surrounding community.
The primary school was shut and hurriedly evacuated at midday on Friday after “an historic ordnance was found at a local beach and taken to the school”.
Parents and carers were alerted to collect their children from the school and the nursery urgently.
A police spokesperson said: “A cordon has been put in place around the area and the school has been evacuated as a precaution.
“Shetland Coastguard and Shetland [Islands] Council are assisting.”
Shetland Islands Council said: “We can confirm an incident at Scalloway Primary School this morning involving historic ordnance. Staff and pupils have now left the building and the school is now closed.
“We’re grateful to Police Scotland and HM Coastguard for their prompt response.”
The nearby health centre also closed and patients were asked not to attend.
