EIGHT more homes could be built at the housing site under construction at Upper Scalloway – bringing the potential total number to 40.

Work is already well underway on 32 units, but contractor E&H is proposing another eight.

The homes currently being built are for Hjaltland Housing Association.

A planning application is set to be submitted soon for the additional houses.

A spokesperson for E&H said: “We are looking at extending the Upper Scalloway scheme by further eight properties, and we expect to be in a position to submit a planning application within the next seven days”

The original plans did include space for an extra four plots for housing at the north end of the site.

Meanwhile Hjaltland Housing Association’s head of investment Paul Leask said the 32 homes are on track to be completed by next summer.

Of those units 26 would be social rent, with the other six available to purchase through the Scottish Government’s shared equity scheme.
