Man dies after single vehicle crash in Papa Stour
A FIFTY one year old man has died after a single vehicle crash on Papa Stour on Friday.
Police Scotland said that the man was flown to hospital in Lerwick with serious injuries after the accident at around 5.30pm.
He later died from his injuries.
Police said that enquiries into the circumstances are now ongoing.
It is believed that Peter Peterson, a manager for executive services at Shetland Islands Council, was the victim of the fatal accident.
Shetland Islands Council chief executive Maggie Sandison paid tribute to Peterson, saying that she had lost a friend and the SIC had “lost an outstanding officer”.
“He had a passion for public service and for achieving positive outcomes for Shetland.
“He was a kind man who contributed so much to our organisation and the community.
“I will miss his wisdom, energy, thoughtfulness, patience and humour. My thoughts are with his family at this devastating time.”
Peterson was a hugely influential figure in the world of football, winning a gold medal with Shetland at the 2005 Island Games.
He represented the blues nine times in inter-county matches against Orkney, scoring five goals, and was also part of the Delting FC which presided over an astonishing period of footballing dominance in the 2000s.
Shetland Football Association has postponed Saturday’s Fraser Cup final between Spurs and Whalsay due to the sudden bereavement.
