Reassuring debate on tourism
Reassurance, if any were needed, that Shetland’s future is probably in safer hands than present governance and administration provide, has been shown through the contribution by Anderson High School pupils to the debate on tourism.
Their contribution demonstrates that the all too common dismissal of younger generations, for whatever reason, by many of the older, but certainly not wiser in all cases, is a mistake.
The articles written by them [published locally in various news outlets] illustrate their curiosity and concern relating to tourism, sold by many as a get-rich-quick ploy, with little regard for the negative consequences for the community as a whole that will certainly result if the views of the proponents of tourism, particularly volume tourism, prevail.
Fingers crossed that the pupils involved, and their contemporaries, maintain and expand their questioning nature and analytical skill, and apply them to ensuring the imposition of developments that benefit a few individuals do not submerge Shetland as a community.
