A FILM about a Shetland couple and the otter they befriended is now in the running for a BAFTA television prize on the back of more awards success.

Billy and Molly: An Otter Love Story is up for the Specialist Factual prize at the ceremony, which is the biggest awards ceremony in British TV.

It comes just days after the documentary – which stars Walls couple Billy and Susan Mail – won in the Science and Natural World category at the Royal Television Society (RTS) awards in London’s Grosvenor Hotel.

‘A fairytale journey’ – delight as otter film scoops award

The film will go up against a BBC Two documentary on people affected by nuclear bombs, ITV’s Children of the Cult and a Channel 4 programme on the 1984 miners’ strikes for the prize.

Billy told Shetland News yesterday Billy and Molly’s success had left him and his wife stunned.

“Susan said the director set out to make a film that was a fairytale,” he said.

“For us, it’s been a fairytale journey.

“We’re just ordinary folk. You’re not expecting this kind of thing to happen.

“But we’re just going to enjoy it while it’s still happening.”

Netflix programme Baby Reindeer leads the nominations at the BAFTA TV awards, with eight.

The awards will be hosted by actor Alan Cumming and will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 11 May.
