Living Wage award nomination for Scalloway childcare centre
A POPULAR Scalloway childcare provider has been nominated for Living Wage Scotland’s “local champion” award.
Hame Fae Hame, run by Kaye Sandison, last year became one of 2,190 Scottish employers officially accredited for paying the UK living wage of £9.50 an hour or higher to all its staff.
The village-based firm, which last year won a Sunday Times/Lloyds Banking small business award and was granted £88,000 in Scottish Government funding designed to reduce child poverty, has over 20 full and part-time staff and 120 children on its books.
Sandison said that becoming an accredited Living Wage employer was hugely beneficial for businesses and employees alike.
“We joined to demonstrate how much we value our staff,” she said. “The business would be nothing without them and we’re all like one big family.
“After the tough year we had in 2020 we had hoped for slightly easier times in 2021, and we have been so impressed by how the staff have kept going, which is why we applied for recognition in the ‘resilience’ section of the awards.
“We were shocked and surprised to be shortlisted as local champions.”
The other nominees in the local champion category are the Moray School Bank, Scottish Borders Council and CJM Project Financial Management.
Living Wage Scotland campaigns to increase the number of employees earning the living wage and estimates that 45,600 workers in Scotland have enjoyed a pay rise as a result of their employer signing up.
The winners of its 2021 awards will be announced at a virtual ceremony on the afternoon of Friday 19 November.
