News / Thomson gets Baltasound role on permanent basis

Paul Thomson has been appointed as Baltasound's permanent head teacher.

PAUL Thomson has been permanently appointed as head teacher of the UK’s most northerly secondary school and a smaller island primary.

Shetland Islands Council has appointed Thomson, who joined the local authority almost eight years ago, as head of Baltasound Junior High School and Fetlar Primary School.

Thomson was deputy head teacher at Baltasound from April 2013 until August 2015, since when he has been acting head teacher. He takes up the post on a permanent basis from Monday (2 May).

He first joined the council as business studies and computing teacher back in August 2008.

Thomson will be responsible for 85 pupils across the primary and secondary departments at Baltasound, while Fetlar’s primary has a roll of just four pupils.

SIC children’s services director Helen Budge said: “During his time in the school, Paul has established excellent relationships with pupils, parents and staff in both schools and I would like to wish him all the best in his new permanent role as head teacher.”
