TWO Shetland teachers have been shortlisted as finalists at this year’s Scottish Education Awards, sponsored by the Daily Record.
Marianne Raikes from Ollaberry Primary School could be named Head Teacher of the Year during a ceremony held in the Thistle Hotel, in Glasgow, next month.
Raikes has been praised for going the extra mile and encouraging pupils to work to the best of their abilities.
Meanwhile Irene Smith from Bell’s Brae Primary School, in Lerwick, has been shortlisted for the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Smith has worked at Bell’s Brae since 1976 and was due to retire this spring but has now agreed to take on the role of acting head teacher until summer.
She is described as being hardworking, caring and extremely passionate about teaching.
The SIC’s director of children’s services Helen Budge said both teacher were “very worthy nominees”.
Judges will unveil the winners of all 17 categories of the awards on 10 June.
