News / Gales disrupt ferry
WITH forecasters predicting south westerly gales in the Fair Isle sea area covering Shetland and Orkney, ferry operators NorthLink have decided to alter Friday’s southbound sailings.
Passenger ferry Hrossey will slip her berth at Lerwick’s Holmsgarth at 3pm, two and a half hours ahead of schedule with check in starting at 1.30pm and closing an hour later.
The move is design to ensure the vessel will arrive in Kirkwall on schedule at 11pm, leaving 15 minutes before midnight for Aberdeen, but the company stresses these timings could change depending on the weather conditions.
Meanwhile the southbound sailing of the freight vessel Helliar from Lerwick at 6pm has been cancelled outright due to the “adverse weather conditions” and will now sail from Lerwick at 4pm on Saturday.
Serco NorthLink warn that the vessel’s arrival in Aberdeen is likely to be significantly delayed due to the sea conditions.
The northbound sailing of the new-look Hjaltland is to leave Aberdeen on schedule at 7pm, after sailing late from Lerwick on Thursday night and arriving in Aberdeen after 9am.
Freight boat Hildasay is currently berthed at Lerwick and is due to sail at 6pm on Monday.
