News / Norway exchange
THE FUTURE of an exchange programme enabling students from Shetland College to undertake work placements in Norway has been secured for another two years thanks to £70,000 of European funding.
The money from the Leonardo da Vinci Mobility programme will also allow Norwegian students to stay in the isles.
From September, Shetland students can apply for a four week work placement in Norway’s Voss area in early 2014 and 2015.
Shetland Islands Council’s schools service project officer Brian Spence said the funding offered “a tremendous opportunity” for students in vocational training.
“We collaborated closely with Shetland College and our partners in Norway to put this application together and it’s great to get a positive outcome,” he said.
“We’ve built up a strong partnership with our colleagues in Voss and I’m sure participants will benefit hugely from developing their employability skills and living independently in another country.”
Schools service executive manager Shona Thompson added: “It’s increasingly important that young people are exposed to different environments and workplaces and it’s vital they have a chance to practice skills for future learning, work and life. This exchange is a perfect.”
