SHETLAND MSP Tavish Scott joined representatives from Scottish Water this week to tour and officially open two of their latest projects in the isles.
The utility company has spent more than £11 million on a new modern membrane water treatment plant at Sellafirth, in Yell, and a replacement water treatment works in Unst.
The two projects serving remote island communities are part of a £20 million investment in Shetland since 2010.
The company’s Unst visit was followed by a public meeting in the Lerwick Hotel, on Tuesday at 6pm, to give local people a chance to have their questions answered.
Scottish Water’s chief operating officer Peter Farrer said: “This visit is an opportunity to speak to customers in communities benefiting from these significant investment projects and to see the impact they are making.
“The quality of our drinking water in Scotland is at an all-time high and we continue to deliver value for our customers, with our average household charges in Scotland remaining the lowest in Great Britain.”
Scott added: “Local people and businesses have been pressing for improvements to their water supply and I welcome Scottish Water’s investment across Shetland.
“The investment in Unst and Yell is particularly good as it must be the most northerly cash spent by Scottish Water but customers here deserve the same quality as anyone else.”
