News / Dennis Coutts’ ‘60s pics on display
THE WORK of eminent Shetland photographer Dennis Coutts will be showcased at the Bonhoga Gallery from Friday 20 January.
Coutts has been documenting life in Shetland for more than 60 years. For this exhibition work from the 1960s representing Shetland in the pre-oil era has been selected
A Shetland Arts spokeswoman said: “The exhibition will appeal to anyone with an interest in the stories and characters from this period in Shetland’s history.
“While life was very different then, these stunning black and white photographs reflect a character of life in Shetland which is timeless and remains in many ways unchanged today.”
Coutts worked as a commercial photographer from his studio on Commercial Street, Lerwick, combining press photography with family portraiture, social reportage and his own interests in natural history and landscape.
All the photographs in the exhibition have been hand-printed by Dennis’ sonJohn, using traditional darkroom processes.
The exhibition will open on Friday 20 January between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Bonhoga Gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays 10.30am to 4.30pm, and on Sundays between noon and 4.30pm.
Coutts will be giving a short talk about his work in the gallery on Saturday 21 January at 2.30pm, which will provide an opportunity to hear some of the fascinating tales of his life, career and the subjects of his work. The talk is free, with no booking required.
