News / Tobacco testing
THREE out of 10 Shetland shops sold cigarettes to a 16 year old without asking for proof of age during a recent exercise carried out by local trading standard officers.
Despite being against the law, the shops were given formal warnings as these were first offences. They could have faced a £200 fixed penalty or a £2,500 court fine.
Shopkeepers and assistants are being reminded to ask for ID when selling tobacco to young people.
A team from Young Scot will be in Shetland on 6 and 7 December to offer advice to retailers. More information is available from Ross Smith at ross.smith@shetland.gov.uk or 01595 744895.
