Shetland sail into Scottish Cup round two as Championship sides await
SHETLAND women’s footballers out-muscled Musselburgh Windsor on Sunday to continue their Scottish Cup adventure.
The blues made the long journey to the outskirts of Edinburgh for the first round fixture yesterday (Sunday) – their longest ever venture for an away tie.
After overcoming Stewarton Annick and Aberdeen West End in their two preliminary ties, Musselburgh Windsor were the opponents in the first round proper.
Forward Freya Leslie gave Shetland a dream start in the first half after an assist from Sarah Williamson, with the blues 1-0 up at the break.
And Leslie then doubled their lead in the second half, with Shetland seemingly cruising at 2-0.
Musselburgh pulled one back to give Shetland a nervy finish to endure, but they held on to book a dream second round place.
The blues will now hope for a home tie in the next round, with the draw for round two to be made live on the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup YouTube page at 8.30pm tonight (Monday).
The 12 winners from round one – including Shetland – will now be joined by the 12 teams from the Scottish Women’s Championship.
Sides such as Dryburgh Athletic, Elgin City and Bonnyrigg Rose Ladies will be in the hat for the round two draw.
If Shetland make it to round three, they will get the chance to earn a fairytale draw against one of the Scottish Women’s Premier League sides – such as Rangers, Celtic or Glasgow City.
The Scottish Cup second round tie will be played on the weekend of Sunday 11 October.
