A NUMBER of cars were reported as damaged in the Gaet-a-Gott area of Tingwall on Tuesday.

Police Scotland confirmed that vandalism to a number of vehicles in the area was reported to them at around 3.20pm on Tuesday afternoon. It said that enquiries are ongoing.

It follows a widely shared post on social media which said that cars in the area had been scratched or damaged late on Monday night.

THE COMPETITION and Markets Authority (CMA) has called for tougher regulation on the heating oil market to protect consumers from unfair practices.

Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael welcomed the report, which was commissioned after extreme price rises in the wake of the conflict in Iran earlier this year.

The CMA found that though the heating oil market is generally competitive and suppliers have not profited materially from the crisis, consumers are not as well protected as those connected to the grid.

It has recommended the UK government to clearly signpost available payment plans and minimum purchase volumes, and create a register for vulnerable households.

Carmichael said: “The price hikes around the Iran war should be considered a warning shot – it is on the government to ensure that the market is better regulated before the next economic shock hits home.”

ALL FLIGHTS between the Highlands and Islands and other Scottish airports will be exempt from the new air departure tax when it is introduced next year.

Air departure tax will cover Scotland only and will replace the UK Government’s air passenger duty from 1 April 2027.

Deputy first minister and finance secretary Jenny Gilruth said extending the exemption to incoming flights to the Highlands and Islands from other locations in Scotland will improve national connectivity for people and businesses.

Flights from the Highlands and Islands to airports in the rest of the UK will remain exempt, including via connecting flights.

“These ADT exemptions recognise the particular connectivity challenges faced by the people and businesses who have made the Highlands and Islands their home, and will help support communities to thrive,” Gilruth said.
