UHI Shetland pair scoop awards for ‘significant impact’ on student life
A TEACHER and student from UHI Shetland have been recognised for having a “significant impact” on the University of the Highlands and Islands this year.
Linda Wiseman was picked by her peers as the “most inspiring student” of the year, while Christine Hughson was given the award for the “most engaging online delivery” of classes.
Staff, students and clubs from across the UHI were recognised as part of the 2026 Highlands and Islands Students’ Association (HISA) Awards.
Wiseman thanked her fellow students for choosing her to be the most inspiring student of the year, saying she felt like “the lucky one”.
“My fellow students have been everything I could wish for and more,” she said.
She added they had helped her with everything “from showing me how to operate my iPhone to keeping me right with all the different hair products.”
Hughson said it was an “absolute honour and a pleasure” to teach her students across the network, adding she was “delighted to accept this award”.
The annual awards celebrate individuals and groups who have made a significant impact on the student experience across UHI.
Winners and highly commended recipients were selected by a student judging panel made up of HISA elected officers and faculty interns following more than 600 nominations submitted by students.
HISA chief executive Colin Munro said the awards were a “moment of celebration and success for everyone nominated”.
“Our student community from across all UHI locations have taken time to recognise the amazing commitment, kindness, and practical support that our staff, societies, and students display,” he added.
