More pubs get licensing approval to show Scotland’s opening World Cup match
TWO MORE pubs in Shetland have been given late licences to screen Scotland’s opening game at the World Cup next month.
Mossbank’s Welcome Inn and the Masonic Lodge in Lerwick will be allowed to stay open until 4am on Sunday 14 June for Scotland’s first game back at a World Cup for 28 years.
Councillors on Shetland’s licensing board gave the applications their approval at a meeting on Monday morning.
Scotland will take on Haiti in Boston in the opening match, which kicks off at 2am UK time.
Their following fixtures against Morocco and Brazil kick off at 11pm UK time.
The council’s licensing board previously granted late licences to the Lerwick Legion and the Marlex pub in Lerwick to show the opening game, along with one for the Sandwick Social Club.
At Monday’s meeting Shetland North councillor Andrew Hall said showing the game at the pub in Mossbank would be a “welcome” event for the community.
He added that the premises is a “family orientated establishment” which is well run by its owners.
Meanwhile Lerwick North and Bressay member Stephen Leask said the Masonic was a “well managed venue”.
Councillors were also told that the Masonic event would likely be for members only.
There were no details in the applications as to whether the two late night screenings will be ticketed.
