Council / Pubs granted late licences to show Scotland World Cup games

The Marlex (Douglas Arms).

TWO LERWICK pubs and the Sandwick Social Club have been given the green light to stay open later to show Scotland’s World Cup group matches this summer.

The Marlex and Thule bars had applied for licences to stay open until 4am on the morning of Sunday 14 June to show Scotland’s first game back at a World Cup since 1998, against Haiti in Boston.

They also applied for extended licences until 2am on Saturday 20 and Thursday 25 June for the group games against Morocco – also in Boston – and Brazil, which will take place in Miami.

Both bars have said the events would be ticketed.

The Sandwick Social Club had applied for late licences for the same times and dates, but those events will not be ticketed.

Scotland’s match against Haiti kicks off at 2am local time, while the two later games are 11pm kick-offs in the UK.

A meeting of the council’s licensing board approved the licence applications during a brief meeting this morning (Monday).

While the Marlex and Thule licences were passed unopposed, there were concerns about plans from the Sandwick Social Club allowing children 14 and over to watch televised sport.

Board chairman Neil Pearson said he felt the venue should be restricted to people 18 and over for the extended hours, as the Lerwick Legion was when it successfully applied for a licence last month.

However, his amendment was outvoted in favour of a proposal by South Mainland councillor Bryan Peterson, who asked for the extended licences to be granted.
